Jeff Mills – Live at Liquid Room 30th Anniversary Tour
Jeff Mills “Live at Liquid Room” 30th Anniversary Tour
“What happened over those three hours far exceeded anything any of us could have imagined. It wasn’t just a foundational piece of techno culture; it was possibly the greatest DJ set of all time.”
– Jeff Mills
For the noble night that comes every 30 years – Dedicated to “Live at Liquid Room”
It was already past 10pm. Let’s go. I took the Yamanote Line from Shibuya Station and got off at Shinjuku Station. I exited the East Exit and rushed to Shinjuku Liquid Room. October 28th, 1995, I knew that the night would be crazy. The first time I heard Jeff Mills DJ was before summer arrived in 1994. It was at a party called LOST at a venue called VOX in Brixton. Jimmy Cauty and Alex Patterson were playing ambient music in the second room, but there was no one there.
The entire audience was there to dance to a DJ from Detroit. Some were on the floor, some on the speakers, and some were even hanging from the ceiling as the night drew on. What I experienced there wasn’t a DJ as entertainment, or even a DJ as art. It was a spiritual roller coaster, a mind-blowing, cognitive catastrophe and rebirth—that’s the only way I can describe it.
It was the first time I’d heard a DJ who could induce a seismic shift in my psyche and, in fact, penetrate into the consciousness of most of the audience.
It was the same at Shinjuku Liquid Room. Even now, when I listen to the immortal mix CD “Live at Liquid Room, Tokyo,” I can still recall that feeling.
Using Mills’ own tracks, Chicago ghetto house, and European minimal, this techno reaches a critical point. Welcome to the aesthetics of the future. Thirty years later, I couldn’t be happier to see “Live at Liquid Room” come to fruition once again. (Tsutomu Noda)
The stunning DJ set that Detroit techno master Jeff Mills performed at Shinjuku Liquid Room in 1995 has been released as the mix CD “Jeff Mills – Live at Liquid Room, Tokyo.”
Footage of this landmark DJ set, a techno mix CD, has been discovered, and this video, which includes newly filmed interviews, will be released for the first time in Japan. The high-speed, all-vinyl set, performed on two turntables, is a must-see. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the legendary performances of this man from the hardcore to minimal era.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the event, a world tour will be held, visiting not only Tokyo and Osaka, but also cities such as London, Hong Kong, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dublin. Specially for Japan, Jeff Mills will be reprising his DJing style from back then using analog and reel-to-reel equipment, which he no longer plays. Furthermore, the Osaka performance will feature the first joint performance in Japan by DJ NOBU, a Chiba native who is now active worldwide.
